Often, accountability groups do more harm than good.
I have some very good experiences of them.
I also have bad experiences.
I remember once when I agreed with a few friends to keep each other accountable. Our intent was good, but we spent more managing our sin than magnifying Jesus.
We set ‘lines’ and ‘limits’ to curtail our lifestyles.
We picked each other up where we fell short.
We met up to discuss our areas of struggle.
We didn’t talk a lot about love, joy, hope and grace.
We got to feel good about our walk with God because we were ‘fighting our sin’.
Nothing in our lives changed.
