Intro to Matthew (Matthew 13:52)

Bible Passage: Matthew 13:52

The Gospel of Matthew is full of treasures, old and new. As we kick off the series on the Gospel of Matthew we embark on a journey of discovery, revisiting old, and uncovering new, treasures.

Matthew 13:52
He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

Matthew, who? Matthew was one of Jesus’ disciples, called by Jesus to leave his job as a tax collector and follow Him. He had a deep understanding of Jewish law and history, and the central theme of his gospel is how Jesus fulfilled the Scripture bringing salvation to the people of Israel and the whole world.

Matthew & the Kingdom of God. This series is called Kingdom Come and the Gospel of Matthew explores concept of the Kingdom of God in great detail. What do we mean when we talk about the Kingdom?

John Piper quote; The answer is, the kingdom of God is God’s reign — his sovereign action in the world to redeem and deliver a people and then at a future time finish it and renew his people and the universe completely.

Covenant prayer: If Jesus was who He said He was, the Messiah come to save us from our sins, then we have a decision to make. Will we deny ourselves, pick up our cross and follow him? As we embark into 2024, we adopt the tradition from the Methodist church of praying the Covenant prayer.

Methodist Covenant Prayer
I am no longer my own but yours.
Put me to what you will,
rank me with whom you will;
put me to doing,
put me to suffering;
let me be employed for you,
or laid aside for you,
exalted for you,
or brought low for you;
let me be full,
let me be empty,
let me have all things,
let me have nothing:
I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things
to your pleasure and disposal.
And now, glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
you are mine and I am yours. So be it.
And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.

Potential Applications:

  • Take time to read through the covenant prayer, these words are big commitments. Make space for people to respond and pray this prayer if they want.
