Kingdom Come: Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand (Matthew 15:29-39)
Purpose of Scripture: Encountering Jesus
The Bible is not merely for information or inspiration; it is meant to introduce us to Jesus. When we read Scripture, our goal should be to see and know Jesus more deeply. Every gathering should leave us marvelling at how good God is.
Jesus’ Compassionate Healing and Provision
Jesus’ miracles in Matthew 15 demonstrate His compassion and power. The physical healing of the lame, blind, and mute shows God’s care for individual suffering. The feeding of the 4,000 illustrates God’s provision and desire to meet our needs.
The Broader Fulfilment of God’s Promises
Matthew connects Jesus’ actions to the prophecies in Isaiah, showing Jesus as the fulfillment of long-awaited hopes. God’s presence brings both personal healing and societal restoration: justice, joy, and renewal. We, as the church, are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing healing and hope to our communities.
Potential Applications:
- Personal Engagement with Scripture: Encourage the congregation to approach their Bible reading with the intention of encountering Jesus, rather than just seeking knowledge or a feel-good message. This can deepen their relationship with Him and transform their lives.
- Community Outreach and Service: Motivate the church to actively participate in community service projects, focusing on meeting the needs of the poor and marginalized, thereby being the hands and feet of Jesus in their local area. This can include organizing food drives, volunteering at shelters, or offering support to those in need.
