Kingdom Come: The Transfiguration (Matthew 16:28-17:13)
Matthew 16:28–17:13 recounts the Transfiguration of Jesus, a pivotal moment where Jesus reveals His divine glory to Peter, James, and John on a high mountain. In this event, Jesus’ appearance is transformed, shining like the sun, and His clothes become dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appear alongside Him, symbolising the Law and the Prophets, with Jesus at the centre, affirming His supremacy. A voice from a bright cloud declares Jesus as God’s beloved Son and commands the disciples to listen to Him. This profound experience highlights Jesus’ divine nature, foreshadows His resurrection, and emphasises the importance of recognising and following Him as the Son of God.
- The Revelation of Jesus’ True Nature: The Transfiguration is a pivotal moment where Jesus’ divine nature is revealed to His closest disciples, showing them that He is not just a teacher or prophet, but the Son of God in full glory. This moment serves as a confirmation of His identity, aligning Him with the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah), yet surpassing them as the fulfilment of all Scripture.
- The Call to Listen to Jesus: God’s command from the cloud, “Listen to Him,” emphasises the importance of paying attention to Jesus’ teachings and recognising His authority. This moment underscores that following Jesus requires a posture of listening and obedience, acknowledging Him as the ultimate source of truth and guidance.
- The Tension Between Glory and Suffering: The Transfiguration and the upcoming crucifixion at Golgotha represent two sides of the same coin. The disciples, and by extension, all believers, are called to understand that Jesus’ glory and His suffering are interconnected. This duality reflects the Christian journey, where moments of spiritual revelation are often followed by trials and suffering.
Two Potential Applications:
- Developing a Practice of Deep Listening: Cultivate a habit of deep listening to Jesus through prayer, meditation, and engaging with Scripture. Just as the disciples were called to listen to Jesus, modern believers are invited to intentionally create space in their lives for quiet reflection, allowing God to speak and transform them.
- Embracing the Cross in Daily Life: Understanding and accepting the tension between glory and suffering can help us navigate our own challenges. Encourage people to see their struggles in light of Jesus’ example, recognising that following Him involves both the joy of His presence and the reality of carrying our own cross. This perspective can bring strength and hope in times of difficulty.
