Sending Church Synergia (III John 1:8)

3 Jn 1:6  who testified to your love before the church. You
will do well to send them on their journey in a manner
worthy of God.
3 Jn 1:7  For they have gone out for the sake of the name,
accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
3 Jn 1:8  Therefore we ought to support people like these,
that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
This is a verse about churches which send and support
missionaries. He is exhorting this local church to send and
support their missionaries really well. John is exhorting them –
your partnership as a sending church is powerful!
You add something to them, they add something to you.
There’s a mutual benefit between a sending church and a sent
one.
v. 6 “send them on their journey” – a technical NT phrase
meaning fully equipped with money and supplies. Also in Rom
15.24.
v8 “ought to” – obligation, duty, not just a blessed option
Lots of mutual benefit.
Those who are sent receive prayer/ practical support/
honour/recognition/ celebration/ welcome
The sending church benefits from an increased faith dimension,
an engagement with the bigger picture, a bigger world/
enlarged perspective, learnings and discoveries.
