Kingdom Come: The Plot Against Jesus and Betrayal (Matthew 26:1-16)

In Matthew 26:1-16, Jesus predicts His crucifixion during Passover. Meanwhile, the religious leaders plot to arrest and kill Him. In Bethany, a woman anoints Jesus with expensive perfume, preparing Him for burial. Judas Iscariot then agrees to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.

1. Jesus’ Foreknowledge of His Suffering

  • Jesus knew exactly what was about to happen to Him, including His death on the cross. Despite this, He willingly embraced His mission, demonstrating His commitment to God’s plan and His love for humanity.
  • Matthew 26:2—Jesus explicitly tells His disciples that He will be handed over to be crucified.
  • We can trust God’s plan even in times of suffering and uncertainty, knowing that Jesus walked through suffering for us.

2. Extravagant Worship and Devotion

  • The woman’s act of anointing Jesus with expensive perfume was an act of profound love and devotion. Jesus saw this as preparation for His burial, honouring her for the lavish sacrifice. There is something about costly worship that exposes the barrenness of those around you.
  • Matthew 26:7—The woman’s anointing is a powerful symbol of giving our best to Jesus, no matter the cost.
  • We are called to offer our best to Jesus—whether our time, resources, or worship—with a heart of love and devotion, even when it’s misunderstood by others.

3. The Betrayal of Jesus

  • Judas, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, chooses to betray Him for money. His actions show how easily greed and selfishness can lead us away from God’s purpose.
  • Matthew 26:14-16—Judas’ betrayal highlights the contrast between true devotion and selfish ambition.
  • We must guard our hearts against greed and betrayal. Even small compromises can lead to devastating consequences in our relationship with Christ.

Potential Applications:

  1. Trust in God’s Sovereignty:
In moments of pain or confusion, we can find comfort knowing that God is in control, just as Jesus trusted in the Father’s plan for His crucifixion.
  2. Cultivate a Heart of Worship:
Like the woman who anointed Jesus, let us prioritise devotion to Jesus above worldly values, offering our time, talents, and resources generously.
  3. Beware of Spiritual Compromise:
Judas’ betrayal warns us of the dangers of allowing worldly desires to distract us from our faithfulness to Christ. Let’s examine our motives and ensure that our hearts remain aligned with God’s will.
