There is a parable in Matthew 13 about a man who finds treasure in a field, and sells all that he has to buy it.
We are often told that Jesus is the treasure.
We are told that is us who discover him.
We are told that it is us who desire him.
We are told that it us who sacrifice everything to get him.
But that’s not how it is.
That’s not what the kingdom of heaven is like.
That’s not the gospel.
The other parables in the chapter that refer to a ‘man’ are talking about Jesus as the man.
What if Jesus was the one who found a treasure?
What if Jesus was the one who wanted it?
What if Jesus was the one who knew it would cost him everything?
What if Jesus was the one who gladly paid the price?
What if that treasure was you?
That sounds about right to me.
